There is a wide range of alternative energy applications that can be incorporated into your home. You can supplement your energy usage with power sources such as solar, wind, hydroelectric and generators. You can store your energy with various battery and inverter systems or you can simply have an emergency generator backup that helps span power outages. But, if your project is remote or you just want to be energy self-reliant, Spire can help you go “off the grid.”
Some people want to set up for selling excess power back to the power company, but recently there have been more legislative efforts to make it harder to sell your excess power back to the utility companies, but in most locations, there are tax benefits to installing solar power systems and credits from your utility company to offset your monthly bill.
Alternative Energy and "Off the Grid" Potential
Options:
- Install a smaller system to supplement your energy bill. This is usually a solar power system.
- Install a generator backup
system that powers your essential systems during power outages. This will require a stored fuel source.
- Install a battery backup system,
such as a Tesla Powerwall, and use your stored power up to 24 hours a day. This system can be powered by solar, wind, generator and,
in some cases, small personal hydroelectric generators. The best systems will be a combination of sources and sized to meet all your
energy needs for “off the grid” potential and true energy independence.
It 's much easier and economical to design and install components of your alternative energy system during initial home construction than it is to retrofit systems after construction.
